'Be Seen' Pitch Competition
Local companies dedicated to celebrating women of color entrepreneurs hosted the Be Seen Pitch Training and Competition, Tuesday, February 6th. Brazen St. Louis, The Balsa Foundation, DK Solutions and The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce co-hosted the event which was presented by JPMorgan Chase Foundation.
I was 1 of 17 women entrepreneurs of color who represented their bold and innovative ideas and businesses. We received pitch training and feedback and then competed for the top 6 spots. The finalists (Felice McClendon of SoundScrip, Rachel Simon-Lee of Heartwork Videos, Brittany Hill of Back Trap Yoga, Shayba Muhammad of Mahnal Jewelry, Ronke Faleti of Korédé & Nadia Shakoor of Agrela Ecosystems) will compete on March 3 for a final round of an elevator pitch competition.
"Between 2007 and 2016, the number of women-owned firms increased by 45% a rate 5 times the national average. 78% of these net new women-owned firms are owned by women of color. Unfortunately, fewer than 15% of all ventures receiving equity capital in 2014 had women on their executive teams, and only 2.7% of the companies had a woman CEO. Even more discouraging, women of color received only 0.2% of all venture capital funding over the last five years." (Brazenglobal.com)
St. Louis consistently presents opportunities to entrepreneurs who have a dream and passion to get their idea validated and their business running. I'm excited and grateful for another opportunity to present Heartwork Videos to the STL community and the rest of the world. #BeSeen.
